Beginning in 1970 as student-operated KERS at Sacramento State, the organization has seen many changes over the years. In 1979, KERS became KXPR, broadcasting classical music, jazz, news and public affairs programming to central valley residents at 23,000 watts. In the 1980's, KXPR built a new tower, increased their signal power to 40,000 watts, and was the #8 station out of 255 nation wide broadcasting 24 hours a day. In 1991, KXJZ signed on at 50,000 watts, broadcasting jazz, news, public affairs and locally-produced specialty programs. WJSP-FM (88.1 FM) is the Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) radio station serving Columbus and all of west-central Georgia. It shares a radio tower with GPB TV station WJSP-TV just outside of Warm Springs, Georgia, its city of license. The station was one of the first GPB radio stations, first broadcasting in 1984. Unlike some of the other stations in the system, WJSP-FM only simulcasts the GPB radio network, with no local programs.
